Planning a Garden

There are many reasons to plan a garden. For some it is a source of pleasure and helps them relax or relieve stress, for some its a hobby, and for others it is simply to improve their homes curb appeal. Whatever your reason for planning a garden, read on for the basic steps of planning a garden.

  1. Before you buy, make sure you know what type of garden you want. Do you want herbs, vegetables, flowers or plants.
  2. Now that you know what type of garden you want, its time to decide where to plant. Remember to keep in mind the type of garden and the types of plants that will be there. Some plants will interfere with the foundation of your home, water lines, overhead electrical lines, etc. Talk to a professional if you are unsure.
  3. Using paper, or a computer if you want, draw out the site. Be sure to include building, walkways, and existing plants and trees. Also take note of the type of soil you have, the sun exposure, climate, and any other areas that might cause problems.
  4. Once you know this information plant selection will be much easier. When selecting plants, consider the sun exposure they require, moisture needed, special soil requirements, and size at maturity.
Planning a garden can be a big task, but with time, patience, research and work you will have a beautiful garden.
