Recipients should be aware of a scam that has emerged in connection with the pending Tax Rebates. Under recently passed legislation, the IRS will mail tax rebate checks to eligible taxpayers. The Security and Investigations Division has been alerted to a scam related to the Tax Rebates.
Several complaints have been registered after potential victims received unsolicited emails and telephone calls requesting taxpayers' social security and bank account numbers claiming the IRS will use the information to directly deposit rebate checks into the taxpayers account.
The IRS does not call or email taxpayers requesting such information. Taxpayers solicited in this manner should file a complaint with the IRS at www.irs.gov
